The Feed : Illusion there is something interesting everyday
Interesting shit, doesn’t happen in a day, in an hour… in an instance.
Interesting things are most of the time a result of natural selection over a time period. Sometimes, in rare occasion, they can happen quicker through investment, skill or extraordinary occasion. But in majority of the times, it is just work of humanity naturally selected over time.
2010s gave us The Feed, every scrollable, infinite stream of content. It is said to be curated for your interests, which is true. But more impactful angle of this content is not so much in its curation but the time and analysis it takes to evaluate and produce the stream.
“Internet” as we know it, was a result of many decades of content being naturally selected and consumed by a lucky generation in the right time period.
To get my point across in a more demonstrable way, I would like you to do an experiment. I hope you’re on Reddit, we will need it for this occasion;
Go on Reddit, pick one of your favorite subreddits and sort it by Top per Month. I think the content you see will absolutely be interesting. The resulting list could still be further curated by your personal preferences. Especially if it is a popular subreddit, you will have enough data to curate it in that way. If* this is very very important to you, that it is somehow cutdown and curated.
*: this is important to advertisers, because they want your focus to be in their management.
I believe for most people, this if is not so important. It is mainly a concern for advertisers / companies. Your average interweb can’t actually catch up with amount of subpar content thrown at their face. Everybody is feeling FOMO, because of this constant stream of subpar content. Yet nobody is aware, they’re being served shit, for sake of control.
So I have a solution, or rather half a product idea…
An App that curates your subreddits only by Top/Month sorting, and marks them as read, curates them per keyword of your choosing. I promise you, that you won’t run out of content. You will get an experience similar to StumbleUpon of the old internet.
The reason I called this half a product is; because it doesn’t solve who is going to vote all this content for you, if everyone starts only consuming the very top content.
